Security

The role of Colegio Menor’s security department is to safeguard the security of all community members in a non-intrusive way. This department is responsible for coordinating evacuation and contingency plans and for supervising the arrival and departure of students, parents, personnel, and other visitors to the campus.

The school has a team of 14 full-time guards, a network of strategically placed security cameras, and a radio system that guarantees that our bus drivers are in continuous communication with the transportation office and the security office.

To prevent loss, students are encouraged not to bring items of value to school such as CD players and cameras. Items that are left in classrooms, on athletic fields, and in buses are collected and locked in the “lost and found” area near the security office. Students may remove objects from the “lost and found” area upon approval of the security director. Students in grades 5 to 12 have lockers for storing their books and other school-related objects.

The Colegio Menor security department looks forward to working with all members of the community—students, parents, and personnel—in maintaining a safe and comfortable child-centered learning environment.

Transportation

Colegio Menor provides a regular “door to door” transportation service in most of Quito and its surrounding areas. We also have pre-established routes for extracurricular activities. For security purposes, a radio system installed in each bus ensures constant communication with the school’s transportation office. The student bus routes are divided by areas: Early Childhood/Primary and Middle School/High School.

Each bus unit has an assistant in charge of monitoring the discipline during the route. Each one of the school buses, drivers and assistants are carefully selected, trained and monitored by Colegio Menor. Cristina Lozada, the transportation coordinator, is open and ready to receive any suggestions from parents.

This is an optional service. The cost and length of the trip will depend on the area where the student lives. The average length of the trip is 45 minutes.

For additional information, please contact Transportation Office at 289-3391/3395 ext. 101.

Library

The Colegio Menor library supports student learning and research. The library has a collection of more than 28,000 books, reference materials, and audiovisual sources. All Colegio Menor students, parents, teachers, and staff members are welcome to borrow books (reference materials may not be checked out) for a period of two weeks, with the option of renewal. The library is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

How can you help keep our collection circulating?

To be able to provide the most effective service, the library must ensure that its materials circulate efficiently, making them available to all students and other patrons when the need arises.

For this reason, the school requests parent assistance in keeping our library collection circulating. Parents can help by:

  • Knowing what your children have borrowed from the library
  • Keeping these books/materials on a separate book shelf or place at home
  • Assuring that your young child returns his/her materials on time
  • Quickly responding to notes from teachers regarding overdue library books
  • Stressing to your older children the importance of returning library books on time

Students are advised through their advisors or core teachers of overdue books. The library charges fines of $.20 cents a day for materials out more than two weeks past their due date. Since most materials are loaned for a two-week period, this means that students do not accumulate fines until they have had an item for a month. Fines apply only to students in Elementary, Middle School, and High School.

Failure to pay a fine or return an item may result in the student not receiving his/her report card or progress report. Lost books are charged at their replacement rates.

Do you have books or other materials that you are no longer using?

We invite you to donate used books and other materials to the Colegio Menor library. Appropriate donations include the following:

  • Both fiction and nonfiction books for all reading levels in Spanish or English
  • Picture and story books for Early Childhood and Elementary students
  • Educational videocassettes and DVD’s and movies that are appropriate for school children
We look forward to welcoming all members of the Colegio Menor community to the library!

School Infirmary

In case of an emergency, the school has an infirmary with qualified personnel and the necessary medical equipment to attend minor emergencies. In case of a severe injury or illness, we rely on the services of the USFQ Clinic, located 3 minutes from the school. In these cases, the school’s nurse and security personnel will escort the student to the clinic.

Student Insurance

Colegio Menor provides an annual (365 days) accident insurance policy that covers students in Ecuador and the rest of the world. If the accident occurs inside the school or in activities related to the school, students have double coverage. A $25.00 deductible applies to the accident insurance. At the USFQ clinic, located three minutes from Colegio Menor, a regular medical consultation with an on-duty physician costs only $4.99 if you present your child’s student ID card.

The insurance also provides a scholarship to cover the student’s tuition up to his/her graduation, in case of the permanent incapacitation or death of the student’s parent or legal representative. (Coverage varies depending on student’s grade.)

Bookstore

The Colegio Menor bookstore provides the student with a variety of products like sportswear, books, gifts, calculators, school materials, and backpacks. As direct importers, we are able to maintain competitive prices.

Cafeteria

The Colegio Menor cafeteria provides three alternative meals: snack bar, daily menu and salad bar. The snack bar is available only to students in grades 6 to 12. The daily menu is supervised by a nutritionist in order to guarantee a healthy and well balanced meal, meeting quality and cleanliness standards.

The cost of the snack for all Play Group, Pre-Kinder and Kinder students is included in the tuition. Beginning in 1 st grade, the food service has an additional cost depending on the selected menu. Parents may make monthly or annual payments in the cafeteria.

Primary students are monitored by their teachers during lunch time. Only 6 th – 12th grade students are allowed to pay directly for their meals.
